History
By late 1943 the allies were beginning to gain the upper hand. War production was increasing and throughout the year warships joined the fleet in increasing numbers, replacing previous losses and increasing potential power. The 70ft M.T.Bs had reached their natural limits and it was decided that the motor torpedo boats should combine the roles of an M.G.B and M.T.B, by being more offensively armed.
M.T.B 379 was the prototype for a batch of 16 boats built between 1944 and 1945. The Mk1s were designed by Commander P Du Cane and were equipped with a single, twin 20mm Oerlikon autocannon, four 18" LC Mk1 torpedo tubes, two twin .303" Vickers L.M.Gs. Powered by three 1400 HP supercharged petrol engines, these boats were capable of nearly 40 knots, with an operating range of 470 miles.
