History

The Clyde puffer was a sturdy steam coaster of 66ft length that could carry up to 100 tons of cargo and deliver it with her own gear if there was enough water for her to float. If not she could beach herself and sit on the flats to unload. The engines were of the noncondensing type that resulted in the distinct sound caused by the exhaust giving rise to the name Puffer. The Puffers dimensions were dictated by the locks on the Forth & Clyde canal on which waterway many of the ships traded.

The Puffers could be met anywhere between the Moray Firth and Middlesborough. The types were many and varied to suit the skippers taste, but all were constructed to the basic shape. Many of theses attractive and workmanlike small craft have long gone, but a couple still steam as preserved vessels. The Trilight is of no specific vessel at any one time, but a model typical of the type.
