Model Boats Magazine January 2015

Model Boats Magazine January 2015

Model Boats Magazine January 2015

This issue, the first for 2015, has a full Kit Review by John Elliott of the Deans Marine Royal Navy 25ft Motor Boat, a model that is a nice practical size for radio control operation and providing plenty of scope for being configured to represent one carried by a particular warship. In addition, John Blackwell has restored and updated a 50 year old Fairey Huntsman to give many more years of useful service using brushless electric motor propulsion. Tony Dalton has built a modified version of S.S. Noggsund from the popular Glynn Guest plan, and called it Bjorn D.

We have reports from the International Model Boat Show held in November 2014, this always being a popular UK three day event, as well as from the Blackpool Model Boat Show and the Deans Marine 2014 Open Days in September.

Model Boats magazine sells worldwide and it is always nice to see the models of our overseas readers and this month we include those of Steve Martin from Canada. His models are outstanding and in a class of their own, so it is a pleasure to share them with you.

There are the usual regulars in this issue including Range Finder, Flotsam and Jetsam, Boiler Room and BMPRS News, as well as club news from Southend MPBS, Sheffield SMS and the Bournville Submarine Day, so something for everyone we hope.

Model Boats Winter Special 2014

Model Boats Winter Special 2014

Model Boats Winter Special 2014

This Special Edition of Model Boats includes a comprehensive Plan Feature for a US Coast Guard Picket Boat by John Parker and two other major articles, one about radio control by Dave Milbourn and one for everything you need to know about getting started in steam written by Richard Simpson. Both of these contributors are passionate about their hobby and experts in their respective fields. In addition, Glynn Guest has a thoughtful piece about using basic mathematics when designing models and determining 'will it ' or will it not'! Dave Wooley is an acknowledged expert model maker as well as being enthusiastic about warships, their models and everything to do with them, and he has supplied a short article on airbrushing and what you need to know to get started. This form of painting is widely used in all model making disciplines and it is a skill well worth having.

The 1:12 scale Feature Plan, obtainable from MyHobbyStore for the 38 foot US Coast Guard Picket Boat is as always, CAD prepared by John Parker and it is to the same high standard as his previous models and plans in this magazine. His supporting article describing its construction sequence makes this a really attractive project for model boat builders of all skill levels.

The Model Boat Convention 2014 at Haydock Park welcomed back the Russian modellers who did so well at the recent Naviga World Championships. They brought along their models and not unsurprisingly, did rather well in the competition! Colin Bishop went to the bi-annual Model Shipwright Society Exhibition in Kent and photographed some of the remarkable models on display. So these two reports show the top class models being built world-wide.
