History

The design of these Air Sea Rescue launches was an adaptation of a Motor Gun Boat being developed by the British Power Boats Co, for the Royal Navy. These craft were the first to be fitted with aircraft type turrets from the start. During the Dieppe raid when some of the craft were attacked and sunk with loss of life they were subsequently fitted with a 20mm machine cannon on the stem which increased their firepower considerably. After experience in the Channel these vessels earned a great reputation amongst their crewmembers, the racy lines of the craft added a touch of glamour when the outline of the type was used for the arm badge worn by the crews.

Although the Whalebacks saw service around the coasts of Britain, some of the types were sent to the Med. and to the coasts of India.
